Brief Timeline

Embarking on a grand tour of Morocco offers an incredible opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of its culture, history, and landscapes. Starting from Casablanca and journeying through Tangier, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fes, Midelt, Merzouga, Tinghir, Dades, Ouarzazate, Taroudant, Agadir, Essaouira, Marrakech, and back to Casablanca, you’ll experience the best of Morocco. Here’s an overview of what to expect at each stop, including historical insights:

Casablanca

Start:

the economical capital Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, is modern yet deeply rooted in its Islamic heritage. Visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, with its minaret standing tall at 210 meters. The mosque’s construction was completed in 1993 and it is one of the few mosques open to non-Muslims.

Tangier

Next Stop:

Tangier, the gateway between Africa and Europe, has a rich history of Phoenician, Roman, and Islamic influences. The Kasbah Museum in the old city offers insights into its diverse past. Tangier has been a strategic military and trading port throughout history, especially during the 20th century when it was an international zone.

Chefchaouen

Following:

Chefchaouen, known as the Blue City, is famous for its blue-painted buildings. Founded in 1471 as a small fortress, Chefchaouen served as a base for fighting the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.

Volubilis

Then:

Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins. Established in the 3rd century BC, it became an important outpost of the Roman Empire and was graced with many fine buildings.

Fes

Afterward:

Fes, the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco, was founded in the 8th century. It is home to the University of Al Quaraouiyine, the oldest existing, continually operating university in the world. The city’s medina, Fes el Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest urban car-free zones in the world.

Midelt

Proceed to:

Midelt, located in the high plains between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountain ranges, is an important mining center. It’s also known for its apple orchards and traditional Berber handicrafts.

Merzouga

Next:

Merzouga is famous for its proximity to Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco’s two great ergs – large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. The area is known for its stunning sunrise and sunset camel treks.

Tinghir

Then:

Tinghir is a stunning oasis town with lush palm groves and a magnificent backdrop of rugged mountains. The nearby Todra Gorge, with its dramatic 300-meter-high canyon walls, is a popular spot for rock climbing and hiking.

Dades

Continue to:

The Dades Valley, known as the Valley of Roses, is renowned for its spectacular landscapes, fortified kasbahs, and the Dades Gorge with its winding roads and stunning views.

Ouarzazate

Afterward:

Ouarzazate, known as the Door of the Desert, is famous for its film studios where movies like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Gladiator” were filmed. The nearby Aït Benhaddou is a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Taroudant

Next:

Taroudant, with its historic walls and traditional souks, offers a glimpse into the Morocco that predates the tourist boom. It’s known as the “Grandmother of Marrakech” for its similar, but older, city walls.

Agadir

Then:

Agadir is a major modern city known for its beautiful beach and seaside promenade. Rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1960, it’s now a vibrant tourist destination.

Essaouira

Proceed to:

Essaouira, a charming coastal town, is known for its fortified walls, fishing harbor, and Gnaoua World Music Festival. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting a mix of Moroccan and European architecture.

Marrakech

Next:

Marrakech, the Red City, is famous for its ancient palaces, gardens, and the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Key sights include the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, and Majorelle Garden.
